ABOUT THE WORK

Waco Mammoth National Monument introduces its inaugural Artist in Residence Merli V. Guerra (Assistant Professor of Dance Technology, Texas A&M University), whose work as a choreographer and interdisciplinary artist combines dance, film, and technology to honor historic sites. In celebration of Waco Mammoth's decennial as a national monument, Guerra presents her Texas A&M research “TRACE,” a performance installation within the dig shelter combining dance, motion capture technology, video projection, and 3D printing to translate the ephemeral art of dance into physical artifacts ("trace fossils") left behind.

"TRACE" incorporates scientific and behavioral elements into its choreography. At times, the dancers embody the role of the paleontologist, carefully excavating the soil in search of hidden fragments. At others, they act as a familial mammoth herd, supporting one another and taking moments to "listen" to each other's movements via infrasound (a method of seismic communication used by modern day elephants to "hear" through their feet, miles apart). The work also acknowledges ongoing scientific hypotheses related to the paleontological dig, including theories surrounding the role of water at the site and the layering of mammoth remains over time. "TRACE" shows reverence for these creatures, while reminding visitors that these now stagnant fossils were once living, breathing, moving beings.
